BOOK REVIEW of Author Prashant’s ‘The Jehlum Boys’

Let’s beat that summer reading slump! Read Prashant Pandita’s heart-wrenching debut novel “The Jehlum Boys”. A book that lays bare the haunting past of Kashmir Valley.

Summary –

The author has woven a story of friendship intertwined with longing and betrayal. Nishant and Mudassir were two inseparable friends. Their bond was one of the many things shattered by the tragic events of 1990 in Kashmir.
“Aes Banaviiav Pakistan, Batav Rosteu Ti Batanev Saan (We shall make Kashmir a part of Pakistan – without Hindu men, but shall keep their women)”

Nishant and his family fled to a refugee camp in Delhi, leaving Mudassir behind. This split led them down different roads scarred by pain, betrayal, and revenge. Yet, fate had other plans, bringing them back together in a combination of deceit and danger.
“Life had taken an unexpectedly cruel turn, having suddenly become more about surviving than living.”

I won’t spoil the intricate plot for you, but here are a few pointers that you should watch out for –

How do two friends, once tied by the pure bond of friendship, cope with the pain and trauma that day left behind?
Will they overcome the misunderstandings and find their way back to each other?
How do you hold onto hope amid utter destruction?

Likes and Dislikes-

The author has blended heart-wrenching emotions with thrilling action. The characters come alive on the pages. You will find yourself completely immersed in Nishant and Mudassir’s journeys. You will cheer for their wins and cry at their losses.
“Anyone can steer a boat when the waters are calm and weather is sunny, but a real sailor is the one who steers his go through rough weathers.”

The author has captured the nuances of Kashmiri culture and language beautifully. The format could have been better. But, these minor hiccups did little to hurt the experience.

Final Thoughts –

“The Jehlum Boys” is not just a tale of friendship. It’s an exploration of the human spirit’s capacity for hope, love, and redemption amidst utter devastation. The character arcs in this book will leave you feeling moved. The author’s storytelling will remind you of the enduring power of friendship, even in the darkest times.
“Only a Nishant can bring Mudassir back”

Get ready for a rollercoaster of emotions as you dive into “The Jehlum Boys.” It’s a testament to the human spirit’s resilience and the unbreakable bonds of true friendship.
